If you have experienced bone loss from gum disease or tooth loss, then a sinus lift may be the right procedure for you. At SC Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry, we can perform this surgical procedure, which adds bone between your upper jaw and the maxillary sinuses that are on either side of your nose.
Also known as a sinus augmentation, this surgery “lifts” the sinus membrane upward to make room for the bone graft.
When is a sinus lift necessary?
Typically, a sinus lift is performed when there is not enough bone height in the upper jaw for dental implants to be installed.
This lack of bone height can stem from any of the following factors:
- Lost teeth, especially back teeth or molars, in the upper jaw
- Bone loss as a symptom of advanced gum disease
- Bone loss as a long-term consequence of tooth loss
- The maxillary sinus being in proximity to the upper jaw for implants to be installed.
What can you expect from a sinus lift?
First, our staff will take digital X-rays to study your jaw and sinus. A CT scan also may be needed.
For patients with seasonal allergies, you should only schedule a sinus lift when the allergies are not active.
After anesthetic is administered, an incision is made into the gum tissue where the back teeth used to be, opening a small window into the bone, and then the sinus membrane is gently pushed up away from the upper jaw.
The newly created space is filled with bone-graft granules, and the incision is closed with stitches.
After a sinus lift, do not blow your nose or sneeze with force. The dentist may also give you a saline spray to keep your nasal passages moist and prescribe a medicine to prevent nasal congestion and inflammation. Pain medicine, an antibiotic and an antimicrobial mouthwash also may be prescribed as a safeguard against infection.
A follow-up appointment to monitor the success of the sinus lift takes place typically 7-10 days after the procedure. If you are having a sinus lift in preparation for dental implants, the implants will be installed four to nine months after you have healed from the surgery and the grafted material has meshed with your existing bone. The more bone-graft that must be used, then the longer the recuperation time will be.
