Why do I need a dental cleaning?

A prophy, short for prophylaxis, is a dental cleaning that removes tartar and plaque buildup from around your teeth and the gum line. Our mouths naturally harbor bacteria, but if ignored, this bacteria will turn into tartar, a hard substance that can only be removed with a professional dental cleaning.

Benefits of dental cleaning include the following:

  • Remove staining from teeth
  • It can improve bad breath, a common symptom of gingivitis or gum disease
  • It can be used as a diagnostic tool for certain health problems, including gum disease, oral cancer and even signs of chronic health issues such as diabetes or kidney problems.

What can you expect during a dental cleaning?

The dental hygienist will clean your teeth using a special scaling instrument that scrapes away tartar buildup.

Your teeth will be flossed and polished, to help remove stains from your teeth.

The dental hygienist will also document any changes in your oral health, making a note of any areas that need addressing by the dentist.

Dental x-rays are often taken during the dental cleaning appointment. The purpose for these x-rays is so that we can see between your teeth to spot any tooth decay that is otherwise not visible by eye.

Who should get a dental cleaning?

Both children and adults should undergo a dental cleaning at least once every six months, as well as maintain a healthy regimen of oral care at home by brushing twice a day and flossing each night.
