A dental implant is the most durable, long-term tooth replacement option.
A dental implant includes the following parts:
- A titanium post that is surgically inserted into the jawbone, replacing the lost tooth root
- A crown, replacing the exterior of the lost tooth
- An abutment connecting the implant post to the bottom of the crown
What to expect from a dental implant procedure
At the first visit, the implant is installed. As you heal, your jawbone fuses to the implant. Healing may take 3-6 months. Once healing is complete, we will cover the implant with a crown that has been designed to match the shape and color of your other natural remaining teeth.
After an implant has been completed, you can maintain it by brushing and flossing it just as you would your other teeth, as part of a comprehensive regimen of at-home oral hygiene that also includes twice yearly visits to your dentist for cleanings and examinations.
Advantages of dental implants
A dental implant is considered the superior tooth replacement option because it is the only restorative procedure that replaces the tooth root, thus protecting against the deterioration of the supporting bone structure or jawbone recession. Plus, since dental implants are permanent, you do not have to take them out like you do a partial denture.
Implants also have a success rate of 95 percent, although good oral hygiene plays a significant role in the success rate of your dental implant.
