Crowns, PFM & Metal Free
Oconee County, Clemson, & Seneca SC
At SC Cosmetic Implant Dentistry, we believe in preventing tooth loss whenever possible. When a tooth becomes seriously damaged because of injury or decay, we can install a crown to save the tooth. A dental crown replaces the entire exterior structure of the tooth while protecting and preserving it from further damage.
A crown is the recommended treatment in the following situations:
- When a tooth is broken or fractured
- When a tooth is misshapen, brittle, short or weak
- When a tooth has been damaged by an older filling that has failed or broken
- When there is a large area of tooth decay
- At the conclusion of a root canal procedure
SC Cosmetic Implant Dentistry uses two different varieties of crowns: PFM (porcelain-fused-to-metal) and metal-free.
A PFM crown consists of a thin metal thimble covered with tooth-colored dental porcelain. A PFM crown possesses the strength and durability to withstand pressure from chewing, which is why they are ideal for back teeth, such as molars.
A metal-free crown is made of 100 percent, high-quality dental porcelain. Each metal-free crown is matched in shape and color to look like your other natural teeth. An all porcelain crown is the most aesthetically desirable restorative option and ideal for highly visible teeth such as the front teeth. A metal-free crown also is a great option for any patient suffering from a metal allergy. The most common metal allergy is nickel, which is present in many traditional metal crowns.
What to expect
To begin the procedure your tooth will be made numb, and then shaped to make room for the crown. Impressions of your mouth and bite are also necessary for the dental lab to use when fabricating your custom-made dental crown. We will fashion a temporary crown that fits over your tooth to protect it while your permanent crown is being made by the lab. You will return for a later visit to have your permanent crown bonded to your tooth, leaving you with a beautifully restored smile.
