Daily diligence: The best way to maintain your oral health is to brush your teeth at least twice each day. Do so using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste. You also should floss daily—preferably after your last meal of the day or right before bed. Encourage these behaviors in your children by teaching the correct brushing and flossing techniques. Children should begin flossing when their teeth begin to touch, forming a contact between them. Remember, it takes at least three weeks to form a habit, whether it is positive or negative.

Mind your plate: A balanced diet is beneficial for good overall health, but also for your oral health. Eat a diet that includes lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, while minimizing your consumption of sugary foods and beverages. Encourage your child to eat healthy snacks, and avoid things like crackers or chips, which tend to stick to teeth, increasing one’s chance of developing tooth decay. Never send your child to bed with a sippy cup that contains any beverage other than water. In fact, new research recommends skipping juice altogether, as it poses no health benefits.

Ditch tobacco: Using tobacco in any form—whether you smoke, chew tobacco or even vape—is harmful to your oral health. Tobacco decreases the oxygen level in your blood and, over time, will do damage to your gums and teeth while increasing the risk of gum disease. This also sets a good example for your children to follow as they grow up.

Preventive care: Ever hear the old saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure? The same applies when discussing your oral health. Visiting your dentist twice each year, as recommended by the American Dental Association, allows a constant monitoring of your oral health and makes it easier for the dentist to identify any changes in the condition of your teeth and gums.

For children, these visits help track the growth and development of their teeth and bones. The professional cleanings performed by your dentist are the only way to remove tartar buildup from teeth, and many dentists offer additional preventive care treatments such as fluoride and sealants. During these visits, the dentist also is able to monitor the growth and development of your child’s mouth, teeth, and surrounding facial bones. Early intervention is important when it comes to preventing or correcting issues concerning development.
